Julia Forster: Making Time to Write

Writers: how do you find time for your creative practice?

With all the demands on our time, it can be hard to dedicate time to writing. But showing up to the page is necessary if you are going to get your book written…

In January 2026, I’ll be joining fellow author coach Kelly Weekes at an online event hosted by Byte the Book where we’ll be discussing strategies writers can try to create space for their writing.

Maybe you’d like to treat yourself and go on a writer’s retreat to nail your final draft, or perhaps you’d like to create a retreat-like experience for yourself at home?

Will 2026 be the year you develop habits, consistency and boundaries to create some time for writing in your everyday life and schedule? If so, how are you going to master that delicate art of saying ‘no’?

Both Kelly and I will be able to offer guests plenty of tips and strategies to make 2026 the year you will find the time to write.

As a mum of two teenage kids studying for a PhD in Creative Writing to write my fourth book, it’s crucial that I figure out how to spend my time and keep focused on the job at hand. I’ve tried everything from extreme calendarising to Bullet Journaling to testing out James Clear’s Atomic Habits and I now have crafted a bit of a blend of the strategies that suit me best for my practice.

Helping writers dedicate time and space for their creative practice is exactly why I opened the Writers’ Cabin retreat for creatives. The Cabin is a deeply intentional space for writers to focus on what matters most to them, away from everyday pressures.

I will be speaking from a place of first-hand experience around how tricky it can be to juggle caring responsibilities with creative practice… I’d love for you to join me! Book your place on the workshop here. This event is free for Byte The Book members and £25 (plus VAT and Booking Fee) for everyone else. If you’re not already a member you can join Byte the Book from £30 a month here.
