Author Coaching With Soul

I currently offer author coaching to clients who come to stay on week-day stays at the Writers’ Cabin. If you’re interested in booking an author coaching session, you’ll have the option to add this at the checkout when booking your creative holiday via the Writers’ Cabin page here. These 90-minute in-person sessions are held in my consultation room on-site in mid Wales and cost £90.

I also offer one-off check-ins lasting 90 minutes for clients who have previously been coached by me. To schedule a check-in call or to join the waiting list for when I re-open my client list and private coaching practice, please contact me here.

Areas in which I coach writers include:

  • Managing writer’s block: Have you drafted the same 10,000 words umpteen times? We’ll explore how strategies to shift that pattern together
  • Dealing with imposter phenomenon: Maybe you don’t feel ready to share your work with the world? We’ll get curious together about what’s underneath that feeling
  • Procrastination: Perhaps you watch Netflix shows on evenings when you have committed to write? I’ll ask how that might be serving you
  • Undergoing mindset shifts: Do you notice a voice in your head saying that your writing isn’t worthwhile? Perhaps we can befriend that voice in your head together and ask what it’s afraid of
  • Tackling negativity bias: I wonder if rejection after rejection has left you feeling battered? And how would it be to re-frame setbacks as obstacles you’ve overcome instead?
  • Reconnecting with creativity and joy: When was the last time you picked up your laptop and pen with relish? We’ll work together on what brings you joy
  • Holistic goal setting: 60% of the British population aspire to be a writer (source: YouGov). We can work together on setting goes that take account of demands on your time in other realms so that your goals are realistic and achievable
  • Offering compassionate accountability: Have you tried and failed to take crash courses in how to write a novel in one month and fancy a more bespoke approach? My formula is no-size-fits-all; each coaching journey is unique

I offer you the time and space you need to think, reflect, and to become more aware of the challenges and opportunities confronting you and your writing. I will bear witness, listen, support and challenge. You will set the agenda and the pace of your inner work.

Coaching is distinct from mentoring or manuscript assessment in that coaching does not involve my telling you how to write or how to get published. Nor do I assess the quality of your manuscript. Rather, we will look together at aspects of your writing life and how you can access the wherewithal within you to reach your full potential.

You can expect bespoke coaching sessions which look at transforming your writing practice rather than examining a more transactional relationship with creativity. Write Within coaching is not based on a one-size fits all formula such as ‘write a novel in six weeks’. Keeping up my creative practice is a cornerstone of my coaching work: I write to better understand the ever-evolving challenges facing writers like you.

I’m a writer. Why should I get author coaching?

Are you an author, poet or writer with a committed practice who wants to work with a coach who specialises in working with writers in order to move your work-in-progress forwards?

Perhaps you’ve taken time away from your creative project and you want to ease back into sustaining a writing habit?

Or maybe you want some other kind of change within the realm of an already established writing life, experimenting with a genre switch or an approach to writing which is new to you… but you’re not sure where to start.

Creative practitioners are used to being at crossroads. Author coaching gives writers a transformative and confidential space, discrete time and a listening ear to better hear and understand yourself within your relationship to your writing practice. Who are you, and what do you value? Where are you now with your writing projects? Where do you want to be? How are you going to get there?

Writers are accustomed to using their whole selves as instruments or canvases for their artistic practice, and I welcome all aspects of the client’s self into the non-judgemental coaching space. Together, we will discuss the opportunities and obstacles facing you so we can find ways to move towards your goals.
